Dear FLL Coaches:

The Benjamin Logan Local School District located in Bellefontaine, OH is offering NXT-G training for FLL coaches and teachers in cooperation with WPAFB Educational Outreach on July 20 & 21, 2010 from 9am to 3pm each day. Training will be held on the Benjamin Logan campus with the exact location to be announced in June in a confirmation letter.  There will be no cost to participate; however, we ask that you bring at least $10 each day to order your lunch.

The training is limited to the first 30 participants.

Day One: Beginning NXT-G Robot Programming (Tuesday, July 20)

Presented by Kathy Levine

Kathy Levine, the Ohio FLL Director, will lead coaches in a beginning robot programming workshop.  This workshop is geared for those unfamiliar with the NXT-G programming platform, and the day will be spent programming the robot to complete simple programming challenges.  Participants will navigate using sensors, basic loops, simple task-splits, “My Blocks,” etc.

Prerequisite:  None

Day Two: NXT-G Advanced Robot Programming Techniques (Wednesday, July 21)

Presented by Jamie Diamond

This workshop will emphasize robot programming strategies and techniques, focusing more on efficiency of program construction and game strategy rather than programming complexity.  These are the basic strategies and techniques that have enabled the Cougars and others who have incorporated these principles to excel in robot performance in the FIRST® LEGO® League program.

Prerequisite:  Attendees should be familiar and comfortable with the NXT-G programming platform. If possible, bring your own laptop, preferably Bluetooth capable and loaded with the Mindstorms NXT-G software, your own NXT robot (basic robot chassis, using a differential or tank-style steering), 2 touch sensors, 2 light sensors, 3 motors.  (We will have some demonstration robots and laptops available for those who cannot supply the above items).

Jamie Diamond is the coach of the Cougars from Columbus, the team that won 2nd Place Champion’s Award and 1st Place Robot Performance Award at the 2009 Ohio State Championship; 2nd Place Champion’s Award and 1st Place Robot Performance Award at the 2009 FLL United States Open Championship; 1st Place Champion’s Award and 2nd Place Robot Performance Award at the 2010 Ohio State Championship; and 3rd Place Champion’s Award at the 2010 FLL World Festival.  The Cougars have developed an NXT-G Advanced Programming Techniques workshop that the team presented to FLL teams in Cleveland, Dayton and Columbus during the 2009 FLL Smart Move challenge season.  Many teams that attended these workshops attribute their improved robot performance scores to the Cougars and their training, most notably, the PowerStackers, the 2010 Ohio FLL Ambassador Team, who won 1st Place Robot Performance Award at the Wright State University Regional (Top score of 390), and the Thunderbots, who won 1st Place Robot Performance Award at the 2010 Ohio State Championship (Top score of 400).
